Questions you may have before you begin:

1)What is Yoga?

Yoga is a 5,000 year-old practice that focuses on the union of mind, body and spirit through breath- work and meditation. The highest priorities are to calm the mind and the body while rejuvenating the spirit and increasing life awareness of the self. The added benefit is toning of our bodies through the various (and many) poses building strength in muscle and joint flexibility.

2)What are the benefits of yoga?

The benefits are never-ending. Here are some of them:

•Relaxation and stress relief
•Improved digestion and circulation
•Respiratory improvement
•Joint flexibility
•Muscle tone, leaner body mass
•Stronger immune system
•Increased energy, more restful deeper sleep
•Spinal alignment and core strengthening
•Priority handling of yourself, a more positive perspective, increased awareness in health and nutrition of both mind and body.

3)I have never done yoga, will I fit in?

Of course you will. Everyone has those nervous jitters of their first class. Seek out beginner classes at studios in your city and inquire about their class levels and descriptions. Ask if they have beginner or Introductory workshops or if there is an existing class that you will be able to participate in. Be honest with them about your experience, or if you do not have any experience. This is VERY important so the instructor is aware that you may not understand the class format, etc. ALWAYS INFORM ANY STUDIO/INSTRUCTOR OF ANY INJURIES YOU HAVE OR HAVE HAD. CONSULT WITH YOUR MEDICAL DOCTOR OR PRACTITIONER BEFORE BEGINNING ANY NEW PHYSICAL FITNESS PROGRAM. Give yourself some time, everyone has their own beginning.

4)Do I need to be an athlete?

No. As previously mentioned, we all have our own beginning. An Olympic Runner may not be able to touch is/her toes. Strength and Muscle Mass does not always equal Joint Flexibility.

5)What is protocol in a classroom setting?

Yoga is not a competition. Come as you are and stay that way. You should feel safe and protected while in this “space” and any abusive or sexual behavior between students and teachers is strictly forbidden. If you wish not to be touched or adjusted please inform your instructor before class begins. This is your time and you need to be direct and honest as to how you wish to be treated.

6)I am not flexible - will I still be able to bring myself into the poses?

Flexibility accompanies a consistent practice and is deepened through stretching and allowing your body to move and develop at its own pace. Again, everyone has their own beginning. Go easy on yourself – emotionally and physically. This is never a contest.

7)I have had (or have) injuries – are postures modified?

Any physical fitness program should always be discussed with your medical doctor or practitioner prior to you beginning. There are poses for everyone, every shape and size and level. If you have back injuries there are modifications for you. If you have knee problems, neck and shoulder issues or hip tightness, etc., etc., there is always something that can be done in place of what the rest of the class is doing. Remember, every BODY is different. Be sure to always inform your instructors of any issues – from knee problems to high blood pressure, to low blood sugar and so on.

8)Is Yoga a Religion?

No. Yoga is not a religion. It is an ancient philosophy dating back approximately 5,000 years and has never intended to replace any religious doctrine. In fact, combining your faith with yoga may very well enhance your spirituality and belief system within your religion.

9)What equipment do I need? What do I wear?

A yoga mat (or sticky mat) is necessary for a safe practice. Check with your studio, they may offer them for free or charge a small fee to rent for your classes. They are also available in certain retailers, sporting good stores, and online. Your clothing should be comfortable, not tight, but loose enough so you can move and breathe while allowing your instructor to keep track of your alignment and positioning. Yoga can also be practiced at home taking advantage of the wide variety of books, videos, online and audio instruction.
